On The Principle of Sunk Cost

I often find myself applying the Principle of Sunk Cost to many financial problems I encounter.

The Principle, sometimes paraphrased as “don’t chase good money after bad”, holds that certain financial costs cannot be recovered once they are incurred and therefore should not affect future actions or decisions.

A common example (Wikipedia) is that of purchasing a movie ticket and realizing shortly into the movie that it is quite unwatchable. I… Continue

No it’s really 20,000 – Huckabee

I was watching Fox news Sunday night while eating dinner. Around 7:30 PM, my attention was suddenly jostled away from my frozen dinner (dieting…), by an advert for the upcoming Huckabee (as in Mike Huckabee, former presidential candidate) which will feature a segment on house swapping. While I did watch the Simpsons during the 8PM hour, I recorded Huckabee and watched it later on (since I hadn’t been approached for the show, which usually means expect some onlinehousetrading swappers).

The segm… Continue

8,000 Swaps per Month

Nice front page piece (at least online) in the Christian Science Monitor.

A bit short for the amount of research I know went into the story, but at least they tracked down Jerry and Sherry again.

Also, we finally have a statistic regarding how many swaps are taking place:

"But such deals are gaining momentum. Some 8,000 swaps take place every month, estimates Danielle Babb, a real estate analyst and dean of business at Andrew Jackson University in Birmingham, Ala. "

Sounds a bit optim… Continue

The Latest Publicity Wave

It seems like every time I turn on my computer this month, I receive notice of some other new feature on house swapping. And many of these are high profile pieces (ex. Time, CBS Evening News, MSBNBC.com). Is the growth of swapping finally going exponential?

While Domuswap has not been the main feature of any of these recent articles, I can watch the additional traffic that these, nevertheless, generate. The statistics seem to imply that the growth is still linear, and tends to slow down after t… Continue

How To Make Swapping Work

We’ve come a long way in the two or so years since the emerging of swapping on the internet. Through extensive media coverage, I must think a larger percentage of the population, or at least home owners and sellers with their eyes open for such stories, are aware of swapping. However, the results haven’t proved as promising. Sure, there are a few anecdotes of swaps that have taken place. These more often than not, took place on Craigslist, with several on Domuswap and Onlinehousetrading. I am no… Continue

David,

I remember seeing something on Good Morning America last week about scams about making money on Google. And now I have gotten a message from someone about making money on Google, and then I noticed that many others have also. I don't know if it's real or not, but I think people should be aware that there is a scam out there. I have also gotten many of the same types of emails when I post on craigslist and they are almost identical to the ones I am seeimg here on domuswap now. Irene

Hi,

Not yet, just found your web site the other day and only had time to post photos. The house swapping concept is new to me, although I had been thinking about searching for some concept like this for a month or so I just got around to it lats week and found your web site.

I have multiple properties (mostly coastal) that are for sale and certainly a house swap or trade for an investment property closer to my home or one of the other owner's home is of interest to me.

Thanks,
Michael

This site is terrible. Is it even a house swapping site or a bla bla blog. There are plenty of blog sites out there. I guess I just don't get it - all the old listings are gone. My profile disappeared - gone - and I did not get an e-mail letting me know about any changes.
How do you find people that want to trade with you anyway?????

Cathy
ps I haven't heard back from you from my last e-mail trying to learn how to use this site.

Hi David. . . Wow, you changed your web. I have no idea if you still list properties to trade, doesn't seem like it from your new site. Except I just received an email from you saying someone wanted to talk to me about a trade. I tried to log on, cut and paste into browser, ect, and all i get is this social page. . . SO, i can't respond, and i can't even see if my house is still on your web. ..I don't know if you've gotten other comments about your changes, but as far as i can tell you've made your site much harder to use and its not even obvious that you list houses anymore. . . it seems like only in a chat kind of setting. Can you let me know. Here is what i just recieved from your site:

An inquiry has been made regarding your property at 566 reservoir road , Hillsboro
